An IR is an imaging modality that uses minimal invasive Ultrasound and CT guided biopsies for final histologic diagnosis in addition to some organ system treatments such as abscess drainage and fluid aspiration.

 

To minimise risk to patients, the procedures are usually performed using needles and narrow tubes called catheters, to avoid making large incisions into the body.
